(Mammuthus primigenius)
is an extinct species of mammoth of the family of elephants. This species lived arround 800000 to 600000 years ago in Siberia, northern Eurasia and North America. At the end of the Pleistocene (often referred to as the Ice Age) the wooly mammoth became extinct in large parts of its habitat. However, some smaller isolated pupolations survived until arround the mid-Holocene (~1800 B.C.).
